"My husbandJoe, is a retired teacher having spent 30 years in the Lorain City School system teaching gifted and talented elementary students. He was active in the Ohio and National Education Associations but since 2003 he has been active in laundering, grocery shopping, and telling stories about the Civil War and the Underground Railroad.

He grew up in a bakery during his younger years and later assisted his mother in her antique shop. It's that background that makes him a friendly, knowledgeable innkeeper."

"
My wife,Susan, is also a retired Lorain City School teacher having spent
20 years teaching GRADS & Family and Consumer Sciences or the old 'Home Ec.' classes in Jr. & Sr. high school. She grew up in a restaurant family where she learned the ins and outs of the fine food service. But there was a time during college when her dad sent her out for cabbage and she came back with lettuce! Even Home Ec. majors make mistakes! But she learned a lot over the years and now can serve a smooth and delicious breakfast!

When breakfast is over, you will find her tending the many garden rooms which have been an ongoing project evolving , growing, and blooming for 15 years!"

Brother Against Brother

This is the saying that best describes the predicament that many families (primarily the border states families) faced in which loyalties and military service were divided between the sides of Union and Confederate.

The Crittender brothers were both Brigadier Generals but on opposite sides of the conflict. George B. fought for the Confederacy and Thomas Leonidas fought for the Union.

Many soldiers met their relatives or neighbors on the battlefield. They talked across the lines and then fought to the death in the battle. Union and Confederate forces stationed at Fredericksburg during the winter of 1862 traded items by constructing small boats and floating them back and forth across the Rappahannock river.
