NAVAL WARFARE
Duel Between Merrimac & Monitor
This naval battle fought on Mar. 8 and 9, 1862 was famous for being the first fight between two powered ironclad warships. The Union Monitor was of an entirely strange new design with a revolving turret on top. The Confederate Virginia was really a sunken Union ship that had been raised and rebuilt also as an ironclad. The result of the battle was inconclusive but it caused the demise of the wooden war ships as it proved that ironclads were far superior to wooden ships.
