CURRENCY IN MOTION

The South possessed 30 percent of the national wealth but had only 12 percent of the circulating currency and 21 percent of the banking assets. The cotton embargo made matters worse. In 1861, at the beginning of the War, $1.00 in gold cost $1.10. Two years later it had risen to $7.00 and one year later climbed to $20.00. Supply shortages forced the inflation rate even higher. In 1860 at the start of the War, it cost $6.50 weekly to feed a small family but by 1863 that cost rose to $68.25.  Flour was $100 a barrel, beef was $2.00 a lb., apples were $25.00 a bushel, boots were $50.00 and wood was $30.00 a cord.
