This was the 2nd battle in the tangled wilderness with a woods so thick that getting lost was easy. The battle was so fierce that the woods caught on fire and trapped the wounded and added to the deaths.

During this 2 week battle, approximately 35,000 Union troops and only 18,000 Confederate troops were lost but the loss was a greater setback for Lee because he had no replacements.
