What we at Hallauer House are doing to create an
ECO - FRIENDLY
'GREEN'
Bed & Breakfast

This house that is now ‘Hallauer House Bed & Breakfast' was built in 1830 which makes it almost 180 years old. As we think about what this house has endured, what it has witnessed, how it has survived for so long, we realize that we must work to preserve it, as well as our earth, for future generations to come. And as responsible innkeepers, we are tirelessly adding eco-friendly products and practices so that our guests can enjoy a wholesome ‘GREEN' environment.

Our ‘GREEN' practices include the following:

•  A Reuse Your Towel Program whereby we wash towels when guests request a less frequent than daily towel change. This practice conserves resources, time, and wear and tear on the USA made towels.

•  Use of Cotton Towels and Sheets. Cotton products do not add VOC's to the air thus helping air quality in guest rooms. We also have some sheets made of bamboo which is a natural grass that quickly replaces itself in the environment.

•  Our Maintenance for Conservation consists of replacing old wasteful fixtures (light bulbs, old toilets, old shower heads, and appliances) as they break or wear out with new efficient fixtures and appliances. We sacrificed the old inefficient windows and storm windows with new high energy saving double pane windows.

•  The Energy Conservation Program is an ongoing effort to reduce the amount of energy used by using energy efficient lighting, turning off lights and appliances when not in use, and using insulation and weather stripping.

•  We have installed soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, and lotion Bulk Dispensers rather than individual plastic bottles. These dispensers save time, money, and landfill contributions by cutting down on packaging.

•  A Common Guest Newspaper is available for guests to read and then these are recycled into the gardens as weed block or shredded into the compost.

•  All appropriate food scraps are placed in a Compost Pile to biodegrade by bacteria, fungi and other organisms into a soil-like product that we then use in the garden soil.

•  We strive to buy Organic Foods which have been grown with no pesticides or fertilizers and also to provide as many Locally Grown Foods as possible.

•  The New Windows that have been installed allow guests to raise the windows and enjoy fresh air.

•  The entire house is Non-smoking .

•  No Harsh or Harmful-to-Human Chemicals or Cleaning Supplies are used. We use Shaklee all natural cleaning products as well as vinegar, baking soda, borax, and salt. Scented laundry products, carpet cleaners and air fresheners are avoided.

•  We strive for Water Conservation by using low flow toilets, shower heads, faucets, and by laundering sheets and towels only between guests or on every 4th day of a guests stay.

•  If it is necessary to use a disposable item, we use only Recyclable Disposals or Disposables that are Compostable.

•  Our service consists of Durable Service Items: dishes, cups, glasses, mugs, tableware, napkins, and serving pieces that are long lasting, not disposable.

•  We Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce as much as possible. Many unique things are recycled into Garden Objects to enjoy a new life in a new environment!
