The First Church
The First Church was finished in 1843 at a cost of $12,000 and seats comfortably about one-thousand eight hundred people. In its beginning it was one of the finest buildings of the kind in the State of Ohio. It's chief quality is the arrangement of seats.
It was in this church that the Oberlin Wellington rescuers were presented with floral wreaths and bouquets and honored for their part in the freeing of John Price, the runaway slave. This incident also awoke the Nation to the fact that 37 men were jailed for their role in the anti-slavery movement.
