CIVIL WAR HISTORY
From Slave to Politician

Robert Smalls
In 1862, slave Robert Smalls commandeered a confederate steam powered side-wheeler in Charleston, S.C. and delivered it to the Union navy. He was make the captain of the vessel and participated in 17 engagements. After the war, he was able to purchase a home and in 1875 was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served 5 terms.
